Safety on the water cannot be stressed enough. The river is unforgiving to mistakes and you must be aware of the obstacles you are faced with in the waterway. The ever changing currents, tide, and boating traffic provide specific challenges.
The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office is offering the New York State Safe Boating course.
It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sheriff’s office at 150 North Hamilton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie on Saturday May 30
The class is designed as a comprehensive boating course and will teach the fundamentals of safe boating and watercraft operation. Topics include, but are not limited to, equipment, navigation, operations, rules of the nautical road and emergencies, according to the Sheriff’s office.
All operators of personal watercraft who are fourteen or older and operators of motorboat between 10- and 18-years-old are required to take the course. The class is open to people age 10 and up.
The course is free, however attendees who are 18 or older must forward $10 to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to receive their permanent safety certificate card.
